GSA Entrusts Email Service to Google’s Cloud

In a move that confirms the U.S. government’s recent emphasis on seeking cloud-based information technology solutions, the United States General Services Administration has awarded a contract for converting the agency’s email system to a cloud platform. GSA gave the $6.7 million, five-year task order to Unisys, which partnered with Google, Tempus Nova, and Acumen Solutions to compete for it. “Cloud computing has a demonstrated track record of cost savings and efficiencies,” said Casey Coleman, GSA chief information officer.

The marketing stars appear to be coming into alignment for the vendors of open source offerings who are targeting the U.S. government. Significant barriers to adopting open source technology at the federal level are breaking down, and tight budgets provide an opportunity for vendors to emphasize the cost savings features of open technologies. Despite these advantages, vendors will still have to work harder to develop marketing channels to capitalize on the potential for federal sales. For all IT providers, the federal market is a continuing opportunity.

The allure of utilizing the latest advance in information technology — cloud computing — is that cloud applications will greatly increase efficiency and reduce IT costs. The U.S. government, which spends upwards of $80 billion per year on information technology, clearly presents a big opportunity for cloud applications.
By some estimates, nearly 40 percent of annual federal IT spending — some $32 billion — is for infrastructure operations, the component of IT use that embraces cloud technology.
